State of the Union of Ambiance for Android?

"We are a small development shop and while addressing some of the issues with the Android are a priority of ours, working on the iPhone version is higher on the list. We will get to it as we move along however."

An Urban Apps blog post in July 2011 promise frequent updates for the Android version of Ambiance. The last update was released in June 2012. Over a year after the blog post, what is the State of the Union for Ambiance for Android?

Quickstart: feature not finished...

Backup: feature not finished...

Recording: feature not finished...

Audible gap in loops: in progress for 3 months...

Problem playing customer recorded OGGs: ignored since first response from tech support..

So, what is the State of the Union of Ambiance for Android today?

  • The last update to the Google Play store was indeed this June, but this is not the most recent update for Ambiance on Android. We are working on a variety of tasks in parallel, one of which is actually make Ambiance available on as many Android devices (phones, tablets, e-readers) in as many markets as possible. As stated in the quote you referenced, Urban Apps is a very small development shop, so our pace may not be the same as some of the larger companies developing the apps you use on Android. We apologize for any inconvenience, and we assure you that we are always trucking away on designs and features as we consider software to be a forever evolving thing.

    Thanks for your reply. Of course, if I didn't really like the app, I wouldn't care, and I did very much appreciate the NEW label added to new sounds in the last update. However, your reply does trouble me.

    I can understand that Urban Apps would like to expand Ambiance to more platforms in order to sell more apps. But, as a purchaser of the Android app, I feel your company has a need to finish the apps you have already released (three buttons in the Android version serving no purpose but a placeholder). Honestly, it kind of sounds like you are saying that you got the Android version out, it is 'good enough', and you will make minor improvements to it as time permits while you work on developing it for other platforms because expanding your market is the most important thing.

    I know of no other similar Android app that has anywhere near the number of sounds that Ambiance has, but I have two other similar (and free) apps on my phone that have features that Ambiance lacks. I don't think it is wise to rest on your laurels and I think most owner's of the Android app would agree with me. At least, that's my opinion.
    • Rich wasn't saying we were focusing on different platforms, he was saying that we are working on getting the app in multiple different Android marketplaces (Amazon, B&N, Mobiroo, Google, etc...). The challenges that come with the devices associated with those specific stores (Kindle, Nook etc...) are sometimes problematic and time-consuming to solve in a way that does not adversely affect the other devices. Rich's only task is the Android app and he is working on implementing all of the features you have mentioned.

      The toughest currently is the Audio gap found on some devices. While there is an existing solution for apps that ship with gigantic sounds embedded in them, this is not possible due to the nature of the Ambiance sound store. It is a tough problem, but Rich is working hard to come to a solution. The other features on the app are still in progress as well and we are still pushing out updates to the app as frequently as we can.

  • My patience has worn thinner than rsngfrce's after 13 months with no resolution to any of the valid issues s/he raised in the original post. I've purchased both the iOS and Android versions in the past, but will never spend another penny on an app from this developer again.

    Is iOS that important to you that you have not upgraded Ambiance for Android for over a year? You can't asks other Android developers on how they fixed the audio gaps? You can't release a newer version with some of the fixes and new features while still working on other fixes and features? I don't believe the excuses for not upgrading the Ambiance for Android app for this long period of time.

    And on another post you claim that the development for Android version is "complete" and yet the product is incomplete as follows:

    In Android version of Ambiance we:
    1. Can't backup
    2. Can't record
    3. Can't get premium sounds
    4. Don't get the additional premium sounds in the Store or Featured
    5. Can't play other user's recordings in Store Recordings after downloading (you can add the codec in the Ambiance app. You don't need to rely on the codecs in Android itself. MX Player Pro app proves that you can add the codec within the app itself without Android supporting the codec.)

    6. Also "Quickstart" is not functional.

    I feel so stupid for paying for this application. I will be honest, I used a pirated version I found online because I knew that the app was incomplete and as such you should not even charge. We are effectively beta testing for you. I thought "let me buy it to support the developer so the app can be updated", so I paid for it on Google Play even though I had already done so on Apple's App Store. That was back when the Nexus 4 was released. I'm using a Nexus 5 now and your app doesn't even have high-resolution icons. It is an eyesore on my home screen. You charged for an incomplete application, the LEAST you could do is to bring it on par with the iPhone version. I purchased your app on iPhone since v1.0 when it used to be a carousel with an image on the top, back when I had my first iPhone. It is shameful that you can't move past Apple's ecosystem when there are such amazing devices like the Nexus 5 out there, costing half what the iPhone costs. You don't even reply anymore, you probably fired your Android guy and will never update the application again. That's frustrating because I don't know of any alternative with such a vast sound library. Stop trying to port the iPhone version and start from scratch using the Holo UI guidelines, just give us a clean app with the same functions that you offer on iOS.

    Iv wish they would just pull this app. There I'd a reason android users hate them. They've done nothing but treat us horribly. I would recommend everyone give them zero stars.
