I’m unsure

Can I sync my iPhone/iPad library to the Desktop app?

I'm so happy there's a Desktop app at last! I've used the "backup" and "restore" feature in the iPhone and iPad apps to sync my sounds between my 3GS and iPad. This was very handy since I have over a couple hundred sounds in my library. Is there anyway to use this "backup" to populate my Desktop app?

Not at this time. I will change this questions to an idea to see if others are interested as well.

I've been using Ambiance so long on my iPod I can't remember when I got it. Probably one of the first things I bought. I'm realy happy to see a desktop version at last.

In my view, as a user and a fellow app dev, allowing people to sync all the things they've downloaded and customized on their mobile devices would take a high priority. I know it was the first thing I looked for.

First though, I'd make your Win32 app behave more like a Win32 app, and not an apple app ported to over. ;-) Great job regardless, really happy your working on this, you rock!
    • As a long-time Mac user, it's long past time Windows users experienced this. It used to be Mac ports from Windows that were poorly Mac compliant (if at all) were common. Now that Apple makes the best-selling computers in the world, WIndows users get to deal with the bad ports.

I can't imagine spending any time at all perfecting an app on a 32 bit platform. Win32 is a dead end. Win64 is the development platform I'd perfect on Windows. And a Linux port from OSX should be an easy port, too.
    • Never heard someone promote not developing a good app because that's how it was always done before.

Ambiance was one of the first 10 or so apps I downloaded for my first iPhone several years ago, and it's the only one I really can't live without! I was excited to hear about the desktop client, but as a user who has hundreds of sounds, dozens of mixes and playlists, I don't think I would be willing to purchase Ambiance for PC without a way to sync my data at least from iPhone to PC. This is a great idea and I would love to see it happen - this is all thats keeping me from using the desktop client!

The main aspect that is keeping this from happening is the limitations set by the Adobe air framework the app runs on. For security reasons, They cannot allow direct networking like an iPod plugged in, or over bonjour. This left us with another option: user accounts.

Nobody likes user accounts, passwords, privacy issues and at this point we decided to leave the syncing out until another reasonable option presented itself to us.

This being said, we have found in our user testing that the usage of Desktop Ambiance is far different than the usage of the mobile app, as are the ways customers have interacted between them.

I feel that if you are the customer who downloads tons of sounds to have them at your fingertip, then perhaps a nice iPhone Speaker dock would work better so you can have a perfectly synched library always. If you like to just grab what you want to listen to at that moment, then perhaps having a library to listen to those moments on the go should be different than having a library of moments at home to listen to.

This has been an explanation as to why it is not included in the app yet, but the door is not closed. Please feel free to chime in here and let us know how and why you would use Ambiance Synching?

I love love love the iphone app. I also love the idea of the desktop app, but I'd expect it to at least have syncing capabilities.

  • Would there be a way to simply store lists of sounds, both as an overall list of the sounds contained on a device, and to share as lists between users. Then, given that list, you could match the files present with the files needed and fetch the ones missing from your servers instead of us duplicating that effort as backups and synchs.

This might strain the servers at first, but would allow both a sort of "reconstruction" of existing collections on different devices/platforms, which is really what people seem to be wanting, as compared to having the same files on different systems, and some increased user interaction sharing lists of files that say go well with classical music or are nice to fall asleep to.

    • While this certainly is *a* solution, it is probably not *the* solution for this problem. We have experience with backups/restoring on iOS, sharing between devices and have tracked how customers use these features. The way to backup used to be to drag a file into iTunes and have the app read it. To you and I, this is quite trivial, but to the vast majority of customers out there, performing tasks outside of the app adds a complication that just doesn't sit well. We decided that the only way to do this is to do it right: integrated, automatic, easy. Until Adobe relaxes some of the networking rules of the Air platform, we feel that we just can't do it right to a point at which it is not cumbersome for customers to use.
    • That's a fair point. I've jumped several hoops trying to get around this myself, and concede that anyone would need to be familiar with how to move files around in iOS for this to work, and relying on email or dropbox for the solution doesn't sit well with me either. Here's hoping some of the iOS 5 changes and/or iCloud might add sufficient functionality at the OS level you'll feel like more users would find this featue accessible.

Why can't Ambiance desktop restore a backup the same way as on an iPad/iPhone? I took the time to go through all of the sounds via my ipad and download the ones I like. I was able to backup and restore on my iphone so that I didn't have to duplicate the effort. Now if I buy the desktop app, I spend another $9.99 and I have to start from scratch? That seems crazy, particularly since I have to pay so much more for the desktop app. Would it be possible to allow a user's library to be restored on the desktop via an email backup?

  • At the very least, it would be nice to be able to browse and find sounds we like on the desktop app and have them on the iPhone later. Maybe it would be possible to push them, or queue them to download on the iPhone from within the desktop app?

Except I guess that would require an account to tie the desktop and iPhone together.

Maybe it is possible to push the files over Bluetooth or a shared Wi-fi network? That is how Papers 2 by Mekentosj synchs the desktop and iPhone libraries.

  • While I don't have "hundreds" of sounds...yet...I *do* have over 100, and still counting. I listen to Ambiance on my iPod Touch, and normally plug it into my Sony docking speaker when I'm working on a paper, or finance, or other tedious stuff that requires me sitting here at my desk for hours on end. The "white noise" in the background is both soothing AND enough of a distraction to keep me from going nuts.

That being said, when I discovered you had developed a Desktop app, I had to have it. But i would really like to sync all my stuff over to a Desktop app, rather than keep my iPod docked over to one side. Please make this happen!

  • I have used Ambiance for so long I too cannot remember when I got it (on my iphone and ipad). I did not get the desktop app until Mountain Lion came out because of all of the cross platform (mac to iOS devices). It seems that it should go now without saying that sharing of sounds throughout all of the devices one owns should be one of the main draws of the application. I use the sound for helping my children sleep, but have found that due to text messages, email sounds, phone calls, etc. the sound is interrupted too frequently, so I wanted to use the sounds I have made on my computer. I was extremely disappointed to find that a $10 app, does not have this seemingly obvious function. I love Ambiance and have sung its praises for quite sometime, even keeping my wife from going and getting a sound machine because of the desktop app. Please make this a part. I think even if it required user ids, we all have so many of them now that no one would be upset. You could even make the user id an option only for those that wanted to sync, keeping anyone who complains about the user id satisfied. Great App, just add this function....pretty please. Shoot we have to logon to even type this comment....

  • I’m excited about growth.
I feel better not being the only one that can't remember how long ago I bought Ambiance for my iPhone. It's pretty much an everyday use and helps me in so many ways. I have convinced family members and friends to purchase and use it as well and I've never heard anything bad. I love taking pictures of the places I go and use Ambiance to record the sounds as well (St. Patty's Day is always fun to record). I've created numerous mixes with all the downloads I've gotten and now I do the same with the desktop app. But it is a challenge to get that particular mix "just right" a second time since I can't sync what I've created on my iPhone over to my Macbook. Please do consider this addition.

  • I’m hopeful
I'm testing the desktop app right now, since I had no idea this existed outside the iPhone app. I love it all the time while I'm writing various scenes of my novels, and I would LOVE to be able to sync mixes I make on my iPhone to my desktop.

  • I’m bummed!
Have long used the IOS app and recently got the Mac App. The latter is much easier to find new sounds with, and also, the layout is better. It is already my prime focus for use of Ambiance, but I SO need to be able to transfer my downloads from the desktop to the devices. It is way too time consuming to do it manually, and the downloads are harder to find. I have four IOS devices! Please add my vote to the list of those wanting this feature. Cloud sync would be "heaven-sent".

How is this topic 11 months old? I bought this app today expecting it would sync with the desktop version, because what mobile app doesn't sync with its own desktop version? Why should I have to build playlists twice? I'm just glad I didn't waste money on the desktop version before discovering this, because as it is, there's no point. I'd be better off docking my iPhone and plugging my headphones into it while I work instead.

  • If I can add my YES to the idea. I really do believe that there should be a option to sync the list and then re-download on each machine. I believe it must be easy. Just to share the list.

    AMBIANCE IS FANTASTIC!

I am coming from the time of Forest as the only Mac app in the old days of OS 7.
Ambiance is undervalued app. One of the best App hands down.

    Keep up the great work!

I'd even forgotten about this altogether until I got an email notification for a new comment on this post. The people that made this app are ridiculous.
